This is a must read. It has a comprehensive review of British wave patents from 1855 to 1975, see "European Patent Search" below
is clear concise and critical, has loads and loads of information about devices and how they worked up to 1976

3. Tom Thorpe

 

Here is an early Paper by TW Thorpe that has the famous first world wave energy map,

this is where that (peculiar) metric "kW per m of wave crest front" was initiated.
